About Benton County Historical Society and the Corvallis Museum
Since 1951, the Benton County Historical Society (BCHS) has been preserving historical artifacts, photographs and manuscripts in order to interpret and make them available to the broader public. After Philomath citizens advocated for the preservation of the 1867 Philomath College building and placed it on the National Register of Historic Places, the Benton County Museum opened to the public in 1980. Its audiences include students, researchers, visitors to and families from Benton County as well as the Oregon State University community. Its programming includes exhibitions drawn from its collections as well as shows of quilts, fine art and traveling works.
The Museum’s collections grew over tenfold in 2005, when Oregon State University transferred legal ownership of its Horner Collection to BCHS. The Horner Collection includes artifacts, art and documents relating to the early history of the region, OSU and its predecessor, Oregon Agricultural College. This unique collection is the third largest and among the most diverse in the state.
BCHS has embarked on a bold plan for a more-accessible new facility in Corvallis as the Philomath museum lacks the space to present extensive interpretive exhibitions, and the collection is stored away from public view.
The museum’s board secured a highly desirable property at 2nd Street and Adams Avenue in downtown Corvallis. They retained noted Portland architect Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture who has designed a striking and light-filled new building for the site. BCHS plans to open the museum in Corvallis in 2018.
